A young couple who had sexual problems say their relationship is now natural and happy thanks to sex therapy services at our local Relate centre.
The couple, aged 26 and 24, who have asked to remain anonymous, live together and have been in a relationship for just over a year.
“Despite being in love, as a couple we have always found it difficult to have sex,” they say. “It all started with sexual performance anxiety for one of us, which ultimately led to frustration, upset, insecurity and just a lack of desire to try to have sex by both of us.”
The first year of their relationship went by without making any progress, they say. “But instead of giving up on each other we decided to seek professional help.”
Relate Bedfordshire and Luton’s sex therapy programme took them back to square one and allowed them to start their physical relationship from scratch. The couple say they learned to be together physically through simply diarising two sessions a week to massage, touch and be with one another.
“Each week,” they say, “our confidence in our physical relationship grew, until we were able to have sex together naturally and happily.”
The couple say their sex therapist at Relate was kind and understanding and “helped us to not only talk about problems, but learn to recognise then and solve them rather than give up”.
They add: “We want other young couples going through similar problems to know that sex therapy is not there just to help the middle aged, the married… or couples who have been together for many years.
“We would recommend Relate’s service to any young couples who feel happy and content with each other, but sex is preventing them from being at their true happiest.”
